The Abacus Heritage Story
1998
Our journey began when Quantum Insurance Ltd secured the opportunity to establish cell captive insurance operations for JD Group (now Pepkor Lifestyle).
2006
What started as a small insurance operation grew into a R1.2 billion gross written premium business.
2007
JDG Micro Insurance and JDG Micro Life were established, laying the foundation for what would later become Abacus.
2008
We issued our very first policy as JDG Insurance after obtaining insurance licences in a record three months.
2010 – 2015
We successfully navigated major regulatory changes, industry reforms, and operational challenges while continuing to innovate and grow.
2016
We officially became “Abacus”, representing insurance customers can count on.
2017 – 2020
Despite the challenges of the Steinhoff collapse and industry uncertainty, we remained resilient, retained regulatory good standing, and became part of the Pepkor Group.
2020 – 2021
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we adapted quickly to support customers, partners, and the business through unprecedented challenges.
Today
Abacus continues to evolve as Pepkor Group’s insurer, driven by innovation, resilience, and a commitment to providing easy and affordable insurance solutions.
